Pope Francis will canonise Blessed John Henry Newman in St Peter’s Square, Rome at 10am Local Time today, Sunday 13 October. There is a great deal of excitement surrounding the occasion which will make Cardinal Newman (1801-1890) the first English non-martyr saint since the 17th century. The canonisation will be widely celebrated, with Prince Charles leading the UK delegation in Italy. Closer to home 14 children from two Arundel & Brighton schools named after Cardinal Newman – a primary school in Horsham and a secondary school in Hove – will be flying to Rome to join the celebrations.

Blessed John Henry will be remembered at our 10.30 Mass here today, Sunday 13 October, with Newman hymns and in prayer. He occupies a special place in the hearts of many of us here at West Grinstead.

We have been pleased to welcome several new pilgrimage groups recently, including from St Raphael Church, Kingston, from St Anthony of Padua Church, Anerley and today (Saturday 5th) from Corpus Christi Church, Tonbridge, bringing to (no fewer than) TEN NEW GROUPS we shall have welcomed this year – in addition to our regular, annual pilgrimage groups!

Many thanks to our volunteers, in conducting history talks and tours, and in helping with refreshments.
