Pope Francis will canonise Blessed John Henry Newman in St Peter’s Square, Rome at 10am Local Time today, Sunday 13 October. There is a great deal of excitement surrounding the occasion which will make Cardinal Newman (1801-1890) the first English non-martyr saint since the 17th century. The canonisation will be widely celebrated, with Prince Charles leading the UK delegation in Italy. Closer to home 14 children from two Arundel & Brighton schools named after Cardinal Newman – a primary school in Horsham and a secondary school in Hove – will be flying to Rome to join the celebrations.

Blessed John Henry will be remembered at our 10.30 Mass here today, Sunday 13 October, with Newman hymns and in prayer. He occupies a special place in the hearts of many of us here at West Grinstead.
